To describe male spine movement and posture characteristics during coitus and compare these characteristics across 5 common coital positions. Summary of Background Data. Exacerbation of pain during coitus due to coital movements and positions is a prevalent issue reported by low back pain patients. A biomechanical analysis of spine movements and postures during coitus has never been conducted. Methods. Ten healthy males and females engaged in coitus in the following preselected positions and variations: QUADRUPED, MISSIONARY, and SIDELYING. An optoelectronic motion capture system was used to measure 3-dimensional lumbar spine angles that were normalized to upright standing. To determine whether each coital position had distinct spine kinematic profi les, separate univariate general linear models, followed by Tukey’s honestly signifi cant difference post hoc analysis were used. The presentation of coital positions was randomized. Results. Both variations of QUADRUPED, mQUAD1 and mQUAD2, were found to have a signifi cantly higher cycle speed than mSIDE ( P = 0.043 and P = 0.034, respectively), mMISS1 ( P = 0.003 and P = 0.002, respectively), and mMISS2 ( P = 0.001 and P < 0.001, respectively). Male lumbar spine movement varied depending on the coital position; however, across all positions, the majority of the range of motion used was in fl exion. Based on range of motion, the least-to-most recommended positions for a male fl exion-intolerant patient are mSIDE, mMISS2, mQUAD2, mMISS1, and mQUAD1. Conclusion. Initial recommendations—which include specifi c coital positions to avoid, movement strategies, and role of the

Background and purpose: Reports of pattern motion between lumbar spine and hip vary for stoop, loading conditions or the pathology present, such as chronic back pain. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the relative contribution of the hip joint and lumbar spine during stoop lifting in subjects with and without a history of low back pain. Materials and Methods: This clinica...
متن کاملCoordination and timing of spine and hip joints during full body reaching tasks.
Coupling of spine and hip joints during full body reaching tasks was investigated in 16 participants (8 male and 8 female) who performed reaching tasks at comfortable and fast-paced movement speeds to three targets located in a para-sagittal plane. The participants paused at target contact for 500ms and then returned to an upright posture. Three-dimensional joint motions of the spine and hip we...

STUDY DESIGN The motion of each cervical vertebra during simulated rear-end car collisions was analyzed. OBJECTIVES To clarify the mechanism of zygapophysial joint injury during whiplash loading. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA The zygapophysial joint is the suspected origin of neck pain after rear-end car collision. However, no studies have been conducted on the mechanisms of zygapophysial join...

OBJECTIVE To find out whether taking images of the male and female genitals during coitus is feasible and to find out whether former and current ideas about the anatomy during sexual intercourse and during female sexual arousal are based on assumptions or on facts. DESIGN Observational study. SETTING University hospital in the Netherlands. METHODS Magnetic resonance imaging was used to st...
متن کاملKinematic measurement of the lumbar spine and pelvis in the normal population.
Spinal and pelvis motion has been studied by a variety of different methods, the majority of which have a number of limitations. The present study investigated motion characteristics of the lumbar spine and pelvis using a three-dimensional optoelectronic system. The aim of our study was to determine kinematic parameters of spine and pelvis during trunk flexion, extension and lateral bending in ...
